Oxford Driving Test: The Islip Route

This is one of the routes used from Oxford DVSA Test Centre on James Wolfe Road, Cowley. It covers some of the most varied roads in the city, from narrow residential streets to a dual carriageway, with multiple speed limit changes, a staggered crossroads with a STOP sign, and the Headington ring road roundabout.

Direct answer: The Islip route takes in Hollow Way, Horspath Driftway mini roundabout, the Eastern By-pass, Headington Quarry, London Road, the A4142 ring road, and residential streets near Sandhills. Speed limits change between 20, 30, 50, and 70 mph zones. The two junctions that catch the most learners are the staggered crossroads on Quarry High Street and the uncontrolled approach to the A4142 Headington roundabout.

Where does the route start?

All Oxford driving tests begin from the DVSA test centre on James Wolfe Road, Cowley, OX4 2PY. Your examiner will brief you in the waiting room, then walk to the car with you.

The first manoeuvre on this route is a right turn onto Hollow Way.

Hollow Way and the Horspath Driftway mini roundabout

As you pull onto Hollow Way, the speed limit changes from 20 mph to 30 mph. Pick this up promptly and adjust your speed accordingly rather than holding back without reason.

A short distance along, you reach the mini roundabout at Horspath Driftway. Take the second exit. Approach at a controlled speed, give way to the right, and follow the road markings. Mini roundabouts are compact and leave little margin for hesitation, so be decisive once the way is clear.

Eastern By-pass Road: the dual carriageway

Turning left onto Eastern By-pass Road, the speed limit rises to 50 mph. You are now on a dual carriageway.

Build your speed steadily, position yourself in the left lane, and stay aware of vehicles around you. Examiners watch how you handle faster roads, so look well ahead, match the speed of traffic, and stay composed.

Headington Quarry: the most demanding part of the route

This is the section where the most faults occur.

You leave the Eastern By-pass by taking the left slip road towards Headington Quarry. The speed limit drops to 20 mph. Reduce your speed before the slip road, not on it.

Quarry Hollow: a narrow road that requires patience

Quarry Hollow is genuinely narrow. Parked cars and oncoming vehicles can leave very little room. If a vehicle is approaching and there is not enough space for both of you, find a safe place to stop and wait for them to pass.

Stopping to give way is not a fault. Trying to squeeze through when you should have stopped is.

Quarry High Street: the staggered crossroads with a STOP sign

This is the junction that catches the most learners on this route.

Quarry High Street has a staggered crossroads controlled by a STOP sign. A STOP sign requires a complete, full stop. Not a slow roll. Not a pause. A complete stop.

The junction is staggered, meaning the roads on each side do not line up directly opposite each other. After stopping, check both directions of the staggered layout before moving off. Give yourself enough time to do this properly.

Margaret Road, Wharton Road, and emerging onto London Road

Turn right onto Margaret Road. There are speed bumps here. Slow to a steady pace and cross them smoothly without braking sharply or rushing.

Turn right onto Wharton Road, then right again onto London Road. You are now emerging onto one of the busiest roads in this part of Oxford.

London Road can be heavily congested, particularly during the morning commute and late afternoon. The speed limit is 30 mph. Wait for a genuinely safe gap before emerging. Traffic behind you may feel like pressure, but never pull out into a gap that is not safe.

The Headington roundabout and the A40

At the London Road roundabout, take the third exit. Choose the middle lane as you approach, as this puts you on the A40 heading east. The speed limit increases to 50 mph.

Shortly after, take the left turn to Sandhills. This is a slip road and the speed limit drops to 20 mph as you enter the residential area.

The Sandhills residential loop

The route takes you through a series of residential streets: Merewood Avenue, Burdell Avenue, Hill View, Delbush Avenue, and back along Merewood Avenue.

These are quiet streets but do not drop your concentration. Watch for pedestrians, parked cars, and side junctions. Keep to 20 mph where signed and look well ahead.

Back to the ring road and the Islip section

From Merewood Avenue, turn left onto London Road A40 East at the traffic lights. You are turning left to re-join the ring road.

The route then takes a left onto the slip road towards Islip. The speed limit on the A40 at this point is 70 mph and drops to 50 mph as you take the slip road. Adjust your speed in good time before the slip road, not as you are already on it.

Stanton Road has cars parked on the left-hand side. Be prepared to stop for oncoming traffic if the road narrows. Read the road well ahead and do not commit to a gap that is not there.

Bayswater Road and the A4142 Headington roundabout

Turn left onto Bayswater Road. The speed limit changes to 30 mph at this point.

At the A4142 roundabout, take the second exit. You are approaching the Headington roundabout from the Barton direction. This is the only entry to the Headington roundabout that is not controlled by traffic lights, which means you rely entirely on your own observation to judge when it is safe to go.

Once you are on the roundabout and pass the first exit, there are traffic lights. You must obey them. Do not treat them as a concern for other drivers only. If the light is red, stop. Many learners miss this because they focus on the entry and stop paying attention once they are moving on the roundabout.

Horspath Driftway, Hollow Way, and back to the test centre

From the A4142, take the right turn onto Horspath Driftway. This is a slip road serving the Headington hospitals direction and the speed returns to 30 mph.

At the Hollow Way roundabout, take the first exit. Then turn right onto James Wolfe Road to return to the test centre. The test ends when the examiner confirms you can park.

The key points on this route

  • Speed limit changes happen at several points. Stay alert for the transitions between 20, 30, 50, and 70 mph zones.
  • Quarry Hollow requires patience. Stop for oncoming vehicles when the road is too narrow for both of you.
  • The STOP sign at Quarry High Street means a complete, full stop every time, even if the road looks clear.
  • London Road is busy. Wait for a safe gap and do not let pressure from vehicles behind rush you into a risky manoeuvre.
  • The A4142 approach from Barton has no traffic lights. Once on the roundabout, there are traffic lights after the first exit. Obey them.
  • Slip roads need speed adjustment before you reach the new road, not on it.

 Frequently asked questions

Is this a real Oxford driving test route? Yes. This route is used from Oxford DVSA Test Centre on James Wolfe Road, Cowley. Your examiner chooses which route to take on the day, but the Islip route covers roads that appear frequently.

What is the most common fault on this route? The staggered crossroads on Quarry High Street. Many learners either fail to stop completely at the STOP sign or do not check both directions of the junction before moving off.

Does the Oxford driving test go on dual carriageways? Yes. The Eastern By-pass Road is a 50 mph dual carriageway and this route uses it. You also travel on the A40 at 70 mph before taking the Islip slip road. Being comfortable at higher speeds before your test day is important.

What should I do if a car comes towards me on Quarry Hollow? Stop safely, wait, and let them through. Giving way to an oncoming vehicle on a narrow road is not a fault. Trying to pass when there is not enough room is.

How do I handle the A4142 roundabout from Barton? You are approaching from the Barton direction, which is the only entry to the Headington roundabout without traffic lights. Once you are on the roundabout and pass the first exit, there are traffic lights. You must obey them. Many learners miss this because they focus on the entry and stop paying attention once they are on the roundabout.

How do I find the DVSA test centre? Oxford DVSA Test Centre is on James Wolfe Road, Cowley, OX4 2PY. Plan your journey in advance so you arrive calm and on time.
