Driving Lessons in Iffley, Oxford

Iffley is really two places at once, and both are useful when you are learning. There are the narrow lanes of the old village down by the river, quiet enough for your first hours behind the wheel, and there is the Iffley Road, an arterial A road running up to one of the trickiest junctions in the city. Manual and automatic, with pick up from home, work or college anywhere in OX4.

Why Iffley Is An Unusually Complete Place To Learn

Most areas give you either quiet streets or real traffic. Iffley gives you both within a mile, and it puts you on one of the junctions Oxford drivers most often get wrong, which is a good thing to meet with an instructor beside you rather than on your own after you pass.

  • AThe Plain, and the turn you are not allowed to makeYou cannot turn left from the Cowley Road straight onto the Iffley Road at The Plain. There are three signs, and since September 2024 a camera enforcing it. Plenty of drivers still get caught. We teach you to read the junction before you commit to a lane.
  • BIffley Road, the A4158An arterial road with bus lanes, heavy cycle traffic, parked cars and frequent side turnings. Holding your position and planning well ahead matters here more than almost anywhere else in Oxford.
  • CDonnington Bridge Road, the B4495The link across the river towards the Abingdon Road, with a junction at each end. Good for turning right out of a side road into moving traffic, which is a common test fault.
  • DChurch Way, Mill Lane and Tree LaneThe old village, a conservation area of narrow lanes down by the Thames. Quiet enough for your first hours, and tight enough to teach you real clutch control, steering accuracy and how to meet an oncoming car.

The Oxford (Cowley) test centre is just up the road

Iffley learners take the practical test at the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY, a few minutes away. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so nobody can promise you the exact roads on the day. What we can do is make the whole area familiar.

  • The Eastern Bypass and the Heyford Hill and Littlemore roundabouts
  • Bus lanes, cycle lanes and crossings along the Iffley Road and the Cowley Road
  • Independent driving from road signs and from sat nav directions
  • Every manoeuvre practised on real residential streets, not an empty car park
  • Lessons that finish on the roads immediately around the test centre

Roads and Places You Will Know

These are the parts of Iffley and east Oxford we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.

The Plain

East Oxford · OX4 1

The roundabout at the top of the Iffley Road, by the Victoria Fountain. Heavy cycle traffic, several arms and a camera enforced no left turn from the Cowley Road. Learn it properly and the rest of Oxford feels straightforward.

Iffley Road

A4158 · OX4 1

The arterial route from The Plain down towards the village, past the running track where the four minute mile was run in 1954. Bus lanes, cyclists and constant side turnings.

Iffley village and Church Way

Iffley · OX4 4

A conservation area of narrow lanes around the Norman church, running down to Iffley Lock. Where we start most beginners, and where the manoeuvres get practised properly.

Donnington Bridge Road

B4495 · OX4 4

The crossing towards the Abingdon Road, with a junction at each end. Useful for emerging into moving traffic and for judging gaps without rushing.

Iffley Turn and Henley Avenue

Iffley to Rose Hill · OX4 4

The link between the village and the Rose Hill estate, and the way through towards Littlemore. Changing speed limits and a mix of road types in a short distance.

Oxford (Cowley) test centre

James Wolfe Road · OX4 2PY

Where your practical test starts and finishes, off Horspath Driftway and only a few minutes from Iffley. We finish your preparation on the roads immediately around it.

Areas we cover around Oxford Cowley, Littlemore, Blackbird Leys, Headington, Jericho, Summertown, Botley, Wolvercote, Marston and Kidlington. We also teach across Rose Hill and Donnington.
What we offer
Lessons that fit around Iffley life

Lessons Built Around You

Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.

βš™

Automatic lessons

No clutch and no gear changes, so you can put your attention on the cyclists, the bus lanes and the lane choice at The Plain rather than on the gearbox. A popular choice on this side of the city.

πŸš—

Manual lessons

Pass in a manual and you can drive either type of car. The narrow lanes around Church Way and Mill Lane are a good place to build genuine clutch control before taking it out onto the A4158.

⚑

Intensive courses

Twenty, thirty or forty five hours planned around a target test date. Best suited to learners who can commit to several lessons a week.

πŸŽ“

Student and NHS discounts

Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots for shift work.

πŸ”„

Refresher lessons

For drivers who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or who have moved to Oxford and want to get comfortable with the bus lanes, the filters and the ring road.

πŸŽ–

Pass Plus after you pass

Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.

Frequently asked questions

Iffley Driving Lessons: Your Questions Answered

Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons in Iffley?
Yes. We teach both manual and automatic in Iffley. Automatic suits learners who would rather put their attention on the cyclists, bus lanes and lane choice along the Iffley Road than on gears. Manual gives you a full licence to drive either type of car once you pass, and the narrow lanes in the old village are a good place to build clutch control first.
Where will you pick me up for lessons in Iffley?
We pick up from your home, work or study address across Iffley and the wider OX4 area, including Iffley village, Church Way, Mill Lane, Tree Lane, Iffley Turn, the Iffley Road, Donnington Bridge Road and Rose Hill. We also teach in neighbouring Cowley, Littlemore, Blackbird Leys and Headington.
How much are driving lessons in Iffley?
Iffley is inside our standard Oxford area, so a two hour lesson is £85 and ten hours prepaid is £420. Twenty hours is £820, thirty hours is £1,200 and forty five hours is £1,760. New learners can start on a one time introductory offer of £40 for a first hour, £80 for a two hour first lesson or £400 for ten hours. NHS staff and students pay a discounted rate with valid ID.
What is the no left turn at The Plain, and will you teach me it?
Yes, we cover it properly. At The Plain roundabout you cannot turn left from the Cowley Road directly onto the Iffley Road. The restriction has been signed for many years, and since September 2024 it has been enforced by a camera, which has caught a great many drivers. It is a good example of why reading a junction before you commit to a lane matters, so we practise the approach rather than just telling you about it.
Where will I take my driving test if I learn in Iffley?
At the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY. It is the centre most Oxford learners use and it is only a few minutes from Iffley, so the roads around it become familiar during your normal lessons rather than something you cram at the end.
Will I practise the roads used on the driving test?
Yes. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so no instructor can tell you the exact route you will be given. We cover the whole area instead: the Eastern Bypass, the Littlemore and Heyford Hill roundabouts, the Iffley Road and Cowley Road, Donnington Bridge Road and the residential streets used for manoeuvres, until none of it feels new.
Do you teach nervous beginners in Iffley?
Yes, and Iffley is one of the better places in Oxford to start. The lanes around Church Way and Mill Lane are quiet enough for your first hours of steering and clutch control, and we only move onto the Iffley Road and The Plain when you and your instructor agree you are ready.
How do I book my first lesson in Iffley?
Book online through our booking page, or call 01865 763458 and speak to us directly. We will ask where you are up to, agree a pick up point that suits you, and get your first lesson in the diary.
