Driving Lessons in Iffley, Oxford
Iffley is really two places at once, and both are useful when you are learning. There are the narrow lanes of the old village down by the river, quiet enough for your first hours behind the wheel, and there is the Iffley Road, an arterial A road running up to one of the trickiest junctions in the city. Manual and automatic, with pick up from home, work or college anywhere in OX4.
A one time offer for new learners in Oxford.
Standard Oxford rates apply after that. DVSA theory and practical test fees are not included.

Why Iffley Is An Unusually Complete Place To Learn
Most areas give you either quiet streets or real traffic. Iffley gives you both within a mile, and it puts you on one of the junctions Oxford drivers most often get wrong, which is a good thing to meet with an instructor beside you rather than on your own after you pass.
- AThe Plain, and the turn you are not allowed to makeYou cannot turn left from the Cowley Road straight onto the Iffley Road at The Plain. There are three signs, and since September 2024 a camera enforcing it. Plenty of drivers still get caught. We teach you to read the junction before you commit to a lane.
- BIffley Road, the A4158An arterial road with bus lanes, heavy cycle traffic, parked cars and frequent side turnings. Holding your position and planning well ahead matters here more than almost anywhere else in Oxford.
- CDonnington Bridge Road, the B4495The link across the river towards the Abingdon Road, with a junction at each end. Good for turning right out of a side road into moving traffic, which is a common test fault.
- DChurch Way, Mill Lane and Tree LaneThe old village, a conservation area of narrow lanes down by the Thames. Quiet enough for your first hours, and tight enough to teach you real clutch control, steering accuracy and how to meet an oncoming car.
The Oxford (Cowley) test centre is just up the road
Iffley learners take the practical test at the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY, a few minutes away. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so nobody can promise you the exact roads on the day. What we can do is make the whole area familiar.
- The Eastern Bypass and the Heyford Hill and Littlemore roundabouts
- Bus lanes, cycle lanes and crossings along the Iffley Road and the Cowley Road
- Independent driving from road signs and from sat nav directions
- Every manoeuvre practised on real residential streets, not an empty car park
- Lessons that finish on the roads immediately around the test centre

Roads and Places You Will Know
These are the parts of Iffley and east Oxford we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.
The Plain
East Oxford · OX4 1The roundabout at the top of the Iffley Road, by the Victoria Fountain. Heavy cycle traffic, several arms and a camera enforced no left turn from the Cowley Road. Learn it properly and the rest of Oxford feels straightforward.
Iffley Road
A4158 · OX4 1The arterial route from The Plain down towards the village, past the running track where the four minute mile was run in 1954. Bus lanes, cyclists and constant side turnings.
Iffley village and Church Way
Iffley · OX4 4A conservation area of narrow lanes around the Norman church, running down to Iffley Lock. Where we start most beginners, and where the manoeuvres get practised properly.
Donnington Bridge Road
B4495 · OX4 4The crossing towards the Abingdon Road, with a junction at each end. Useful for emerging into moving traffic and for judging gaps without rushing.
Iffley Turn and Henley Avenue
Iffley to Rose Hill · OX4 4The link between the village and the Rose Hill estate, and the way through towards Littlemore. Changing speed limits and a mix of road types in a short distance.
Oxford (Cowley) test centre
James Wolfe Road · OX4 2PYWhere your practical test starts and finishes, off Horspath Driftway and only a few minutes from Iffley. We finish your preparation on the roads immediately around it.
Lessons Built Around You
Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.
Automatic lessons
No clutch and no gear changes, so you can put your attention on the cyclists, the bus lanes and the lane choice at The Plain rather than on the gearbox. A popular choice on this side of the city.
Manual lessons
Pass in a manual and you can drive either type of car. The narrow lanes around Church Way and Mill Lane are a good place to build genuine clutch control before taking it out onto the A4158.
Intensive courses
Twenty, thirty or forty five hours planned around a target test date. Best suited to learners who can commit to several lessons a week.
Student and NHS discounts
Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots for shift work.
Refresher lessons
For drivers who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or who have moved to Oxford and want to get comfortable with the bus lanes, the filters and the ring road.
Pass Plus after you pass
Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.
