Everything you need to know before booking your first lesson.

How much do driving lessons cost in Oxford?

Lessons start from £45 per hour, with a discounted first lesson available for new learners. We also offer block bookings for 10, 20 and 30 hour packages, plus dedicated rates for NHS staff and students with a valid ID. Full pricing is on our driving lessons Oxford prices page so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you book.

How do I pay for my driving lessons?

We accept bank transfer or cash, paid directly to your instructor. After payment, you'll receive an electronic receipt by email. Bank details are shared by your instructor when you book your first lesson. Block bookings are paid in advance and worked through over your following lessons.

How many lessons will I need before my driving test?

There's no fixed number, because every learner is different. The DVSA suggests an average of around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice for most new drivers, but some pick it up faster and some need more time. After your first few lessons, your instructor will give you an honest estimate based on how you're progressing.

Where will I take my driving test in Oxford?

You'll take your test at the Cowley driving test centre, which is the main DVSA test centre serving the Oxford area. It's located off Garsington Road in Cowley, and we'll cover the local test routes during your lessons so you're already familiar with the roads when test day arrives. On the day, your instructor will pick you up beforehand to warm up and run through your show me tell me questions.

Can I switch from manual to automatic mid-course?

Yes, we offer both. Our automatic instructors cover learners who prefer a simpler driving experience or who have struggled with manual gears, while our manual instructors teach learners who want the flexibility to drive any car after they pass. You can read more about our automatic driving lessons in Oxford or our manual driving lessons in Oxford to decide which suits you.

I'm a complete beginner. Is that okay?

That's exactly who we teach. Most of our learners start with no experience at all, sometimes never having sat in the driver's seat before. Our first lesson is built around getting you comfortable with the car in a quiet area, with the controls, the basics of moving off, and stopping safely. You set the pace, and we build from there.

I'm a nervous driver. Will lessons be too stressful?

Nervous learners are very welcome with us, and our teaching style is calm and patient by design. Our cars are dual controlled, so your instructor can step in if anything feels uncertain, which takes a lot of the pressure off. We start in quieter residential roads and only move to busier areas when you feel ready. Many of our learners came to us after a difficult experience elsewhere and passed with confidence.

Do you offer intensive driving courses?

Yes. Intensive courses are designed for learners who want to pass quickly, often within a week or two, and they're popular with university students and people relocating for work. The course is built around your starting level, so a complete beginner will need more hours than someone returning to driving after a break. Full details are on our intensive driving lessons in Oxford page.

I passed years ago but haven't driven much. Can you help?

Yes, that's exactly what our refresher lessons are for. Whether you've been off the road for a few years, lost confidence after an incident, or want to brush up before driving abroad or in a new city, refresher lessons are tailored entirely to what you need. There's no fixed course length, you book what works for you. See our refresher driving lessons in Oxford page for more.

Which areas of Oxford do you cover?

We cover Oxford city and the surrounding areas, including Headington, Cowley, Marston, Summertown, Botley, Iffley, Rose Hill, Jericho, Wolvercote, Blackbird Leys, Littlemore and Kidlington, plus nearby towns like Abingdon, Bicester and Wheatley. Your instructor will pick you up from home, work, university, or college, so you don't lose lesson time travelling to a meeting point.

What do I need for my first lesson?

You'll need your provisional UK driving licence with you, glasses or contact lenses if you wear them for driving, and comfortable flat shoes. Try to avoid heavy boots or sandals because they make pedal control harder. That's it. Your instructor will brief you on what to expect when they confirm your booking.

Will I have the same instructor for every lesson?

Yes. Once you're matched with an instructor, they stay with you all the way through to your test. This continuity matters because your instructor learns how you think, what you find tricky, and how to push you at the right pace. It also means there's no repeating yourself between different instructors who don't know your progress.

Is the lesson length fixed?

Your first lesson is one hour, designed to introduce you to the car and the way we teach. After that, lessons are two hours by default. We've found two hour lessons give learners enough time to settle in, work on something properly, and finish strongly, while one hour lessons often end just as you're getting going.

Can I use my instructor's car for the test?

Yes, and there's no surcharge. The hour leading up to your test is charged at the normal lesson rate, with no premium for using the car. Your instructor will use that warm up hour to run through manoeuvres, the show me tell me questions, and any last minute nerves before driving you to Cowley test centre.

What about Pass Plus after I pass?

Pass Plus is a post test course designed to build experience in conditions you may not have driven in much yet, like motorways, dual carriageways, night driving, and adverse weather. It's a smart investment because some insurers offer reduced premiums to drivers who've completed it. We offer Pass Plus at £300, and you can book it through our Pass Plus page once you've passed.
