Automatic Driving Lessons in Wheatley, Oxford
Wheatley sits five miles east of Oxford, and the examiners come out to it. Ladder Hill, the High Street and the narrow lanes around Church Road all appear on a circuit driven out of the Cowley test centre, so the roads you learn on are roads the test uses. Automatic lessons as standard, manual if you prefer, with pick up from home or work across OX33.

Why Wheatley Learners Are Not At A Disadvantage
Learners in outlying villages often worry they are missing out because the test centre is in the city. In Wheatley the opposite is true. One of the circuits driven out of the Cowley test centre comes east along the Wheatley Road, climbs Ladder Hill and goes straight through the village, which means your local roads are test roads.
- ALadder Hill and the Wheatley RoadA proper gradient on the way in and out of the village. Hill starts, clutch control on a slope and holding your speed on the way down, all on the road examiners use to bring learners here.
- BHigh Street, Station Road and Church RoadNarrow sections, parked cars, restricted visibility and meeting oncoming traffic where only one of you can go. This is where good judgement gets tested, and where a lot of learners lose marks.
- CThe A40 and the Headington roundaboutJoining and leaving a fast dual carriageway, then a large roundabout at the Oxford end. The run into the city becomes part of your training rather than dead mileage.
- DPark Hill and the Holloway Road mini roundaboutMini roundabouts, changes of speed limit and the residential streets where we practise the manoeuvres properly, away from through traffic.
Your test is at Oxford (Cowley), and you will know the way
Wheatley learners take the practical test at the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, so nobody can promise you the exact roads on the day. What we can say is that we have driven a circuit that leaves Cowley and comes out here.
- Multiple speed limit changes between the village and the ring road
- A dual carriageway merge on the A40, joined from both directions
- Narrow lanes with meeting points, which few learners get enough of
- Every manoeuvre practised on real residential streets, not an empty car park
- Lessons that finish on the roads immediately around the test centre

Roads and Places You Will Know
These are the parts of Wheatley and the villages around it we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.
Wheatley High Street and Church Road
Wheatley village · OX33 1Narrow sections, parked cars and limited visibility. The best place in the area to learn how to meet oncoming traffic, judge a gap and decide who goes first.
Ladder Hill and the Wheatley Road
Wheatley · OX33 1The climb between the village and the Oxford road. Real gradient for hill starts and controlled braking, and the way examiners bring learners into Wheatley.
Park Hill and Holloway Road
Wheatley · OX33 1Mini roundabouts and quieter residential streets. Where most of our beginners spend their first hours, and where we practise parallel and bay parking.
The A40 and Thornhill Park and Ride
Towards Oxford · OX3 8DPThe dual carriageway into the city, with slip roads at both ends. Merging at speed and lane discipline, built up to gradually rather than sprung on you.
Oxford (Cowley) test centre
James Wolfe Road · OX4 2PYWhere your practical test starts and finishes, off Horspath Driftway. We finish your preparation on the roads immediately around it, so test day is familiar.
Littleworth, Holton and Horspath
Around Wheatley · OX33Country lanes with bends, hedges and passing places. Honest rural driving, which is on the test out here and which very few learners get enough practice at.
Lessons Built Around You
Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.
Automatic lessons
No clutch and no gear changes, so you can put your attention on the narrow sections through the village and the merge onto the A40 rather than on the gearbox. Our usual recommendation for Wheatley learners.
Manual lessons
Pass in a manual and you can drive either type of car. Wheatley is a good place to learn one, because Ladder Hill gives you honest hill start practice a few minutes from your door.
Intensive courses
Twenty, thirty or forty five hours built around a target test date. Best suited to learners who can commit to several lessons a week.
Refresher lessons
For drivers who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or who have moved out to the village and want to get comfortable with the A40 and the ring road.
Student and NHS discounts
Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots for shift work.
Pass Plus after you pass
Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence. Worth considering out here, with the M40 close by, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.
