The junctions everyone else avoids

Why Wolvercote Is Harder, And Better

Most Oxford learners meet a major roundabout late and nervously. Wolvercote learners cannot avoid them, because the village sits between two of the largest junctions in the county. That is uncomfortable for a few lessons and a real advantage after that, and behind the junctions there are narrow lanes and a canal bridge to keep the rest of your driving honest.

  • AThe Wolvercote roundaboutWhere the A40 meets the A44 Woodstock Road on the northern ring road. Multiple lanes, heavy traffic and exits that come up quickly. Get comfortable here and most roundabouts stop being frightening.
  • BSunderland AvenueThe stretch of the A40 between the Wolvercote and Banbury Road roundabouts, and the only part of the Oxford ring road that is not dual carriageway. A useful oddity, because it teaches you to read the road rather than assume it.
  • CThe Peartree interchange and the A34Slip roads, merging at speed and lane discipline where the A34, A40 and A44 all meet. This is the piece most learners want more of before their test, and it is two minutes away.
  • DGodstow Road, First Turn and the canal bridgeLower Wolvercote's narrow lanes, with parked cars, meeting points and a bridge over the canal. Low speed control and judgement, which the big junctions will not teach you.

Your test is on the other side of the city, and we plan for it

This is worth being straight about. The Oxford (Cowley) test centre is on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY, right across the city from Wolvercote, and none of the test routes we have driven and written up come out to the north west. So your local roads, good as they are, are not the roads on the day.

  • The cross city drive built into your lessons, not saved for test day
  • Later lessons spent on the Cowley side, where the test actually happens
  • The ring road approached from both directions, north and east
  • Independent driving from road signs and from sat nav directions
  • Every manoeuvre practised on real residential streets, not an empty car park

Roads and Places You Will Know

These are the parts of Wolvercote and north Oxford we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.

The Wolvercote roundabout

A40 and A44 · OX2 8

The junction that defines driving up here. Lane choice on approach, reading the signs early and committing to your exit. We come back to it again and again until it is routine.

Sunderland Avenue

A40 ring road · OX2 8

The only single carriageway stretch of the Oxford ring road, between the Wolvercote and Banbury Road roundabouts. Overtaking judgement and speed discipline where the road narrows.

Pear Tree Park and Ride and the A34

Peartree · OX2 8JD

Where the A34, A40 and A44 meet. Slip roads and merging at higher speed, built up to gradually rather than sprung on you before the test.

Godstow Road and First Turn

Lower Wolvercote · OX2 8

Narrow village lanes with parked cars on both sides and the canal bridge. Where we usually start, and where we practise the manoeuvres away from through traffic.

Woodstock Road towards Summertown

North Oxford · OX2

Bus lanes, cycle lanes, side turnings and a steady stream of pedestrians. The road into the city, and where you learn to hold your position in real traffic.

Oxford (Cowley) test centre

James Wolfe Road · OX4 2PY

Where your practical test starts and finishes, off Horspath Driftway on the far side of the city. We build the drive across into your lessons and finish on the roads around it.

Areas we cover around Oxford Summertown, Jericho, Marston, Kidlington, Botley, Cumnor, Headington, Cowley and Iffley. We also teach in Cutteslowe, Wytham and Yarnton.
What we offer
Lessons that fit around village life

Lessons Built Around You

Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.

βš™

Automatic lessons

No clutch and no gear changes, so you can give your attention to lane choice on the Wolvercote roundabout and the merge onto the A34 rather than to the gearbox. Popular with learners who find the big junctions daunting.

πŸš—

Manual lessons

Pass in a manual and you can drive either type of car. We build clutch control on the quiet lanes around Godstow Road before taking it out onto the ring road.

⚑

Intensive courses

Twenty, thirty or forty five hours planned around a target test date. Worth considering here, because the cross city drive to Cowley means fewer, longer lessons go further than short ones.

πŸŽ“

Student and NHS discounts

Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots for shift work.

πŸ”„

Refresher lessons

For drivers who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or who have moved to north Oxford and want to get comfortable with the ring road and the A34.

πŸŽ–

Pass Plus after you pass

Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence. Sensible up here, with the A34 and the M40 close by, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.

Frequently asked questions

Wolvercote Driving Lessons: Your Questions Answered

Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons in Wolvercote?
Yes. We teach both manual and automatic in Wolvercote. Automatic suits learners who would rather concentrate on lane choice at the Wolvercote roundabout and the merge onto the A34 than on gears, which is a fair chunk of what driving up here involves. Manual gives you a full licence to drive either type of car once you pass, and the quiet lanes around Godstow Road are a sensible place to build clutch control first.
Where will you pick me up for lessons in Wolvercote?
We pick up from your home, work or study address across Upper and Lower Wolvercote and the wider OX2 area, including Godstow Road, First Turn, Wolvercote Green, Woodstock Road and the streets towards Cutteslowe. We also teach in neighbouring Summertown, Jericho, Marston and Kidlington.
How much are driving lessons in Wolvercote?
Wolvercote is inside our standard Oxford area, so a two hour lesson is £85 and ten hours prepaid is £420. Twenty hours is £820, thirty hours is £1,200 and forty five hours is £1,760. There is no out of area charge. New learners can start on a one time introductory offer of £40 for a first hour, £80 for a two hour first lesson or £400 for ten hours. NHS staff and students pay a discounted rate with valid ID.
Where will I take my driving test if I learn in Wolvercote?
At the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY. It is on the far side of the city from Wolvercote, which is worth knowing early rather than discovering late. We build the drive across into your lessons and spend the later ones on the Cowley side, so the roads around the test centre are familiar by the time you get there.
Will I practise the roads used on the driving test?
Yes, but we are honest about the distance. The DVSA no longer publishes official test routes, and none of the Oxford test routes we have driven and written up come out as far as Wolvercote. That means the roads around the test centre have to be taught deliberately rather than picked up on your doorstep, so we plan your later lessons around Cowley, Littlemore and the Eastern Bypass instead of leaving it to chance.
The Wolvercote roundabout frightens me. Can I avoid it?
You can at first, and most beginners do. We start on the lanes around Godstow Road and First Turn, where the speeds are low and there is time to think. But we will come back to the roundabout, because avoiding it only moves the problem to test day. Taken in stages, with a clear plan for the approach and the lane, most learners find it stops being the worst part of the lesson within a few weeks.
Will you take me on the A34 and the ring road?
Yes, once you are ready for it. The Peartree interchange is minutes from Wolvercote, so joining and leaving a fast dual carriageway is something you can practise properly rather than once as a novelty. We build up to it through the slip roads, and we do not push you onto it before you and your instructor agree you are ready.
How do I book my first lesson in Wolvercote?
Book online through our booking page, or call 01865 763458 and speak to us directly. We will ask where you are up to, agree a pick up point that suits you, and get your first lesson in the diary.
