Driving Lessons in Cumnor, Oxford
Cumnor sits three and a half miles west of Oxford, and it gives learners two things the city cannot. Cumnor Hill is a long, genuine gradient, so hill starts stop being a car park exercise. The lanes out towards Farmoor and Appleton are proper country roads with bends, hedges and passing places. Add the A420 and the A34 on the doorstep and there is very little left to be nervous about. Manual and automatic, with pick up across OX2.

Why Cumnor Learners Finish Better Rounded
Ask any examiner where town taught learners come unstuck and you will hear the same two answers: hills, and country lanes. Learn in Cumnor and both are on your doorstep from the first lesson, which is not something we can say about anywhere else we teach.
- ACumnor Hill and ChawleyA long, steady climb between Botley and the top of the hill. Hill starts, clutch control on a real slope and holding your speed on the way down, repeated as often as you need rather than found once before the test.
- BThe B4017 through the High StreetCumnor Road and the High Street run through the middle of the village past St Michael's church. Parked cars, narrow sections, and meeting oncoming traffic where only one of you can go.
- CAppleton Road and the lanes to FarmoorBends, hedges, limited visibility and passing places. Rural driving is on the test out here, and very few learners anywhere near Oxford get enough of it.
- DThe A420 and the A34The Faringdon Road to Swindon and the western bypass. Slip roads, merging at speed and lane discipline on fast dual carriageway, built up to gradually rather than sprung on you at the end.
Your test is at Oxford (Cowley), right across the city
We will be straight with you about this one. Cumnor is on the west side and the Oxford (Cowley) test centre is on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY, on the east. That is a proper drive across town, and it is the honest reason Cumnor learners need a few hours of city work as well.
- The drive in becomes free practice rather than dead mileage, every single lesson
- The A34 and the ring road, joined and left from both directions
- Independent driving from road signs and from sat nav directions
- Every manoeuvre practised on real residential streets, not an empty car park
- Lessons that finish on the roads immediately around the test centre

Roads and Places You Will Know
These are the parts of Cumnor and the parish we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.
Cumnor Hill and Chawley
Cumnor · OX2 9The climb between Botley and the top of the hill, with Chawley at the summit. The best hill start practice within reach of Oxford, and it is two minutes from most Cumnor doorsteps.
Cumnor High Street and Cumnor Road
B4017 · OX2 9The road through the village past St Michael's church. Narrow sections, parked cars and pedestrians, which is where judgement and patience get built.
Dean Court and Eynsham Road
B4044 · OX2 9The link down to Botley and out towards Eynsham. Steadier traffic, junctions and a change of speed limit at each end.
Appleton Road and Leys Road
Cumnor village · OX2 9Quieter residential streets and the lane out past the sports fields. Where most of our beginners spend their first hours, and where we practise the manoeuvres.
Farmoor and the reservoir
B4017 and B4044 · OX2 9Where Cumnor Road meets Eynsham Road, with the reservoir alongside. Open country roads with bends and passing places, and the rural driving the test expects out here.
The A420 and the A34
Faringdon Road and the bypass · OX2Fast dual carriageway with slip roads at both ends. Merging, lane discipline and holding a steady speed with traffic moving around you.
Lessons Built Around You
Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.
Manual lessons
Cumnor is one of the best places near Oxford to learn a manual, because Cumnor Hill gives you honest hill start practice minutes from your door instead of a gentle slope found once before the test.
Automatic lessons
No clutch and no gear changes, which takes the hill worry away entirely and lets you concentrate on the bends, the passing places and the merge onto the A34.
Intensive courses
Twenty, thirty or forty five hours planned around a target test date. Best suited to learners who can commit to several lessons a week.
Student and NHS discounts
Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots for shift work.
Refresher lessons
For drivers who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or who have moved out to the village and want to get comfortable with the hill, the lanes and the A34 again.
Pass Plus after you pass
Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence. Country lanes at night are a different proposition, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.
