Driving Lessons in Jericho, Oxford

Jericho is the tightest driving in Oxford. Victorian terraces, permit parking down both sides, cyclists everywhere and streets barely wide enough for two cars to pass. Learn here and low speed control stops being something you worry about. Manual and automatic, with pick up from home, work or college across OX2 and the city centre.

Why Jericho Makes You Precise

Most learners fail on the small stuff. Not roundabouts, but clipping a kerb, freezing when a van comes the other way, or panicking at a cyclist appearing alongside. Jericho serves all of that up on every street, every lesson. It is an uncomfortable place to start and an excellent place to have learned.

  • AWalton StreetThe spine of Jericho. Buses, delivery vans stopping without warning, cyclists on both sides and pedestrians crossing between parked cars near the cinema and the Press. Constant judgement, at twenty miles an hour.
  • BCanal Street, Cranham Street and the terracesVictorian two up two downs with resident parking down both sides. Meeting points every few car lengths, where somebody has to give way and it is often you. This is where learners actually improve.
  • CWalton Well Road and the railway bridgeA narrow bridge with limited visibility and Port Meadow traffic at the far end. Good practice at reading width, holding back and committing once you can see.
  • DHythe Bridge Street and Worcester StreetThe way out of Jericho towards the centre and the station. Also, from September 2026, a traffic filter point. Knowing which way to go here is a genuinely useful thing to be taught.

Getting you out of Jericho, and over to Cowley

Two things a Jericho learner needs that the streets themselves will not give you. The open road, because you cannot pass a test on twenty mile an hour terraces alone. And the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY, which is right across the city.

  • Woodstock Road and the ring road, worked up to properly
  • The A34 and dual carriageway practice, once you are ready for it
  • The cross city drive built into your lessons, not saved for test day
  • Later lessons spent on the Cowley side, where the test actually happens
  • Routes planned around Oxford's traffic filters, which have no exemption for driving lessons

Streets and Places You Will Know

These are the parts of Jericho and central Oxford we use most, and what each one is good for while you are learning.

Walton Street

Jericho · OX2 6

Past the Phoenix Picturehouse and Oxford University Press. Buses, loading bays, cyclists and pedestrians stepping out. The busiest thing in Jericho and the best mirror practice you will get.

Canal Street and Cranham Street

Jericho · OX2 6

The terraced grid, with resident permit parking on both sides. Meeting oncoming traffic, reversing to a gap and judging width. Where we spend a lot of the early hours.

Great Clarendon Street and Nelson Street

Jericho · OX2 6

Quieter than Walton Street but just as tight, with junctions every few yards. A sensible place to build the manoeuvres before taking them anywhere busier.

Walton Well Road and Port Meadow

Jericho · OX2 6

The narrow railway bridge and the road down to the meadow. Limited visibility, a pinch point and somewhere to practise holding back and going when it is genuinely clear.

Hythe Bridge Street and Worcester Street

City centre · OX1 2

The route towards the station and the centre. Hythe Bridge Street becomes a traffic filter point from September 2026, so we teach the way round it rather than into it.

Oxford (Cowley) test centre

James Wolfe Road · OX4 2PY

Where your practical test starts and finishes, off Horspath Driftway on the far side of the city. We build the drive across into your lessons and finish on the roads around it.

Areas we cover around Oxford Summertown, Wolvercote, Marston, Botley, Cumnor, Headington, Cowley, Iffley and Kidlington.
What we offer
Lessons that fit around central Oxford life

Lessons Built Around You

Whatever stage you are at, there is a sensible way in.

βš™

Automatic lessons

Our usual recommendation for Jericho. Without a clutch to manage you can give your whole attention to the width of the gap, the cyclist on your left and the van coming the other way, which is most of what driving here involves.

πŸš—

Manual lessons

Pass in a manual and you can drive either type of car. Jericho is demanding for clutch control, so we usually build the basics on quieter streets nearby before bringing it back in.

⚑

Intensive courses

Twenty, thirty or forty five hours planned around a target test date. Suits students working to term dates, and anyone who wants it done before a job starts.

πŸŽ“

Student and NHS discounts

Discounted rates for students and for NHS staff on production of valid ID, with early and late slots around lectures and shifts.

πŸ”„

Refresher lessons

Common in Jericho, where plenty of people passed years ago and then lived somewhere they never needed to drive. A few hours is usually enough to get it back.

πŸŽ–

Pass Plus after you pass

Structured practice in motorway, dual carriageway and night driving once you have your licence, and it can reduce some insurance premiums.

Frequently asked questions

Jericho Driving Lessons: Your Questions Answered

Do you offer both manual and automatic driving lessons in Jericho?
Yes. We teach both manual and automatic in Jericho, and automatic is what we usually recommend here. On streets this narrow, with cyclists and oncoming traffic to read constantly, not having a clutch to manage frees up a lot of attention. Manual gives you a full licence to drive either type of car once you pass, and we normally build the clutch work on quieter streets nearby before bringing it back into Jericho.
Jericho's streets are so narrow. Is it a bad place to learn?
It is a hard place to start and a very good place to have learned. Most driving test faults are low speed judgement rather than anything dramatic: clipping a kerb, hesitating at a meeting point, poor observation around parked cars. Jericho gives you all of that on every street, so you get far more practice at it than someone learning on wide suburban roads. We just do not start you on Walton Street on day one.
Where will you pick me up for lessons in Jericho?
From your home, work or college address anywhere in Jericho and central Oxford, including Walton Street, Canal Street, Cranham Street, Great Clarendon Street, Nelson Street and Walton Well Road. Parking in Jericho is resident permit only on most streets, so we will agree a sensible spot to meet when you book rather than leaving it to chance on the day.
How much are driving lessons in Jericho?
Jericho is inside our standard Oxford area, so a two hour lesson is £85 and ten hours prepaid is £420. Twenty hours is £820, thirty hours is £1,200 and forty five hours is £1,760. There is no out of area charge. New learners can start on a one time introductory offer of £40 for a first hour, £80 for a two hour first lesson or £400 for ten hours. NHS staff and students pay a discounted rate with valid ID.
Do Oxford's traffic filters affect my driving lessons?
They affect the route, not your lessons. Oxfordshire County Council is running a traffic filter trial from Monday 28 September 2026 at six locations, including Hythe Bridge Street and Thames Street, which are the roads between Jericho and the city centre. The filters apply to cars, they are enforced by number plate cameras, and there is no exemption for driving instructors or learner drivers. We plan lesson routes around them, which is one of the practical advantages of learning with someone who drives these streets every day.
Where will I take my driving test if I learn in Jericho?
At the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road, OX4 2PY. It is on the other side of the city from Jericho, so we build the drive across into your lessons rather than saving it for test day, and we spend the later lessons on the Cowley side so the roads around the test centre are familiar.
Do you teach nervous beginners in Jericho?
Yes, and we are careful about where we start. Nobody's first lesson happens on Walton Street at five in the afternoon. We begin on the quieter terraced streets, or take you a few minutes out to somewhere calmer, and work back into the busier parts of Jericho once the basic control is there and you are ready.
How do I book my first lesson in Jericho?
Book online through our booking page, or call 01865 763458 and speak to us directly. We will ask where you are up to, agree a pick up point that works with the parking, and get your first lesson in the diary.
