Getting you ready for the Oxford (Cowley) test centre

Your practical test will be booked at the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road. Lessons build up to the roads examiners actually use, in a sensible order, so nothing on test day is the first time you have seen it. You will work on:

  • The Headington roundabout system and London Road
  • Multi lane roundabouts on the Oxford ring road
  • Bus lanes, cyclists and traffic through Cowley
  • Quieter residential streets in Littlemore and Marston for early lessons
  • Bay parking, parallel parking and pulling up on the right

We would not recommend a lesson straight off a night shift, and your instructor will talk that through with you.
Can you pick me up from the John Radcliffe or the Churchill?
Yes. Your instructor can meet you at a safe and legal spot close to the John Radcliffe, the Churchill, the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, the Warneford, the Manor Hospital or the Littlemore sites. Most learners are collected from home instead, whichever suits your day better.
Do you teach automatic and manual?
Both. We have automatic instructors and a fully qualified manual instructor. Most NHS learners choose automatic driving lessons, which usually means fewer hours to reach test standard.
How many driving lessons will I need?
The DVSA suggests around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice for the average learner, though this varies a great deal. Automatic learners often need fewer. After your first lesson your instructor will give you a realistic estimate rather than a sales figure.
Can I do an intensive course using my annual leave?
Yes, and it is a common approach with NHS staff. An intensive driving course of 20, 30 or 45 hours can be condensed into a block of leave. Book as far ahead as you can, because intensive weeks fill up early.
Where will my driving test be?
At the Oxford (Cowley) test centre on James Wolfe Road. Your lessons build up to the roads examiners use around Cowley, Headington and the Oxford ring road, so the test route will already be familiar.
Do you book my driving test for me?
No. We no longer book DVSA practical tests on behalf of learners. You book your own test at gov.uk/book-driving-test, and your instructor will advise on timing and readiness.
What happens if my shift changes and I need to cancel?
We ask for 48 hours notice, and short notice cancellations may be charged. Rotas move, so tell your instructor as soon as you know and we will do our best to move the lesson rather than lose it.
Is the discount available to students too?
