Oxford Driving Test: Cowley Junction Roundabout Sandy Lane West

This is one of the more demanding routes used from the Oxford DVSA test centre on James Wolfe Road, Cowley. It combines a tight residential loop, a close sequence of mini roundabouts in Blackbird Leys, and two separate passes through the Cowley Junction roundabout on the Eastern Bypass. Knowing this route in advance gives you a genuine advantage on the day.

The Cowley Junction Sandy Lane West test route starts and ends at James Wolfe Road. It travels via Hollow Way and a residential loop through Cranmer Road, Horspath Road, and Marshall Road, joins the Eastern Bypass at Cowley Junction (fourth exit, Ring Road South), loops through Sandy Lane West and three mini roundabouts in Blackbird Leys, continues via Cuddesdon Way and Watlington Road, returns through Cowley Junction a second time (fourth exit, Ring Road North), and finishes via Horspath Driftway and Hollow Way back to the test centre.

Leaving the test centre: James Wolfe Road and Hollow Way

The route begins with a left turn out of the test centre on James Wolfe Road. You then turn left onto Hollow Way. As you join, the speed limit drops to 30 mph, so check your speed as you settle into the road.

Hollow Way carries more traffic than many learners expect, and there is a bus stop on the left-hand side. On your test day, you may find a bus pulled in there. If that happens, do not panic. Look ahead, check whether it is safe to pass, and move around the bus carefully when the road is clear. Hesitating here is fine. The examiner expects patience and good observation, not rushing. Checking to the right, assessing whether the gap is safe, and committing smoothly once it is clear, that is exactly what a confident driver does.

The residential loop: Cranmer Road, Rupert Road, Horspath Road, and Marshall Road

After Hollow Way, a left turn takes you onto Cranmer Road. This is a narrower road, and there is a speed bump at the start. Ease off in good time so you cross it smoothly without jolting.

The route continues right onto Rupert Road, left onto Horspath Road, right onto Wilkins Road, then right onto Marshall Road. Marshall Road is also narrow. Watch for oncoming vehicles, and be ready to hold back and give way if the road narrows to the point where only one vehicle can pass at a time.

From Marshall Road, a left turn brings you back onto Hollow Way. This is a tighter turn than it looks. Most learners clip the left kerb here because they carry too much speed into the corner or turn in too early. Keep your speed low, check both directions clearly, and take the turn with enough room to stay well away from the kerb as you complete it.

Garsington Road and the first approach to Cowley Junction

At the traffic lights on Garsington Road, the route turns left. The speed limit after the lights is 30 mph. Continue along Garsington Road, taking the second exit at the roundabout.

This brings you to the Cowley Junction roundabout on the Eastern Bypass, and this is the most technically demanding section of the route. It appears twice. On this first approach, you are taking the fourth exit, following the signs for Ring Road South.

Lane choice is everything here. You need to be in the correct position before the roundabout, not while you are already on it. Once on the roundabout, pass the second exit and move to the middle lane. After the second exit, position yourself in the right lane, ready to take the fourth exit. Use the slip road to build your speed and aim to match the pace of traffic already on the Eastern Bypass before you emerge. The speed limit is 50 mph.

Sandy Lane West and the Blackbird Leys mini roundabouts

From the Eastern Bypass, take the slip road on the left towards Sandy Lane West. The speed drops to 20 mph here, so ease back early as you leave the dual carriageway. Turn left at Sandy Lane West.

Blackbird Leys Road then brings you to three mini roundabouts in quick succession. The first two are on Blackbird Leys Road and both take the second exit, continuing ahead. The third is at Merlin Road and also takes the second exit.

These three mini roundabouts sit very close together. The most common mistake here is accelerating away after the first or second one before you are mentally ready for the next. Treat each one as a separate junction. Arrive at a controlled speed, give way to the right, and take your exit calmly before the next one comes into view.

Knights Road, Cuddesdon Way, and Watlington Road

From the mini roundabouts, the route continues right onto Knights Road, then right onto Cuddesdon Way. Cuddesdon Way is a narrow residential road with cars parked on the right-hand side. You have priority on this road, but that does not mean forcing your way through. If a vehicle is coming from the opposite direction and there is not room for both of you, hold back and let them through. The examiner is watching how you handle the meeting situation, not just whether you know who has priority in theory.

A left turn onto Watlington Road follows. The speed limit is 30 mph.

The return leg: Cowley Junction again, Horspath Driftway, and back to the test centre

The route returns to the Cowley Junction roundabout on the Eastern Bypass for a second time. This time the fourth exit leads towards Headington. Choose the right lane before the roundabout and follow the Ring Road North markings on the road surface.

Under the bridge, move to the middle lane. After the third exit, be in the left lane. Signal left and use the slip road to build your speed before emerging onto the ring road. The speed limit is 50 mph.

The exit is Horspath Driftway, heading towards Headington Hospital. Take the slip road on the left. There is a give way at the end, so be prepared to stop if needed. Cancel your signal once you are on the slip road. Check over your shoulder as you reach the junction with Horspath Road. The speed drops to 30 mph.

Two mini roundabouts then bring you back towards the test centre. At the first, take the first exit onto Hollow Way. At the second, take the exit for James Wolfe Road. The test is finished.

The most important things to remember on this route

  • Speed drops on Hollow Way (to 30 mph) and on Sandy Lane West (to 20 mph). Be ready for these and check your speedometer at each transition.
  • If a bus is stopped on Hollow Way, treat it as a meeting situation. Look, assess, and move around it only when it is safe.
  • The turn back onto Hollow Way from Marshall Road is tighter than it looks. Most learners hit the left kerb. Take it slowly.
  • Cowley Junction appears twice. Each time, lane choice must be sorted before you reach the roundabout, not once you are on it.
  • The three Blackbird Leys mini roundabouts are close together. Treat each one as a separate junction.
  • Cuddesdon Way is narrow with parked cars. You have priority, but use judgment in meeting situations.
  • Cancel your signal as soon as you are on the Horspath Driftway slip road. Do not carry it through to the junction.
  • Check over your shoulder at Horspath Road before emerging.

Frequently asked questions

How many times does Cowley Junction roundabout appear on this route?

Twice. The first time, you take the fourth exit heading south on the Eastern Bypass towards Ring Road South and Sandy Lane West. The second time, you take the fourth exit heading towards Headington and Ring Road North. Both require the same approach: correct lane choice before the roundabout, smooth lane changes on it, and good use of the slip road to build speed when emerging.

What lane do I need at Cowley Junction roundabout?

On both approaches, the fourth exit requires the right lane. Choose the right lane as you approach, pass the second exit in the middle lane, then move right and exit at the fourth. On the return pass, the same principle applies: right lane on approach, follow the Ring Road North markings, move to the middle lane under the bridge, then into the left lane after the third exit, signalling left to use the slip road.

Are there speed limit changes I need to watch for?

Yes. Hollow Way is 30 mph. Sandy Lane West drops to 20 mph as you come off the Eastern Bypass slip road. The Eastern Bypass itself is 50 mph both times you join it. Horspath Driftway returns to 30 mph. Checking your speed at each transition is something examiners notice.

What should I do if a bus is stopped on Hollow Way?

Treat it as you would any obstruction. Check ahead, look for a safe gap, and move around the bus when it is clear to do so. Do not rush or cut close. The examiner is not expecting you to ignore the bus; they are expecting you to deal with it safely. A careful, well-observed overtake of a stationary bus is good driving, not a problem.

What is the most common mistake on this route?

The return onto Hollow Way from Marshall Road catches many learners out. The left turn is tighter than it appears, and carrying too much speed or turning in too early leads to clipping the left kerb. Slow down well in advance, check both directions, and take the turn with enough room on the left throughout the whole arc.

How do I handle the three Blackbird Leys mini roundabouts?

Treat each one as a completely separate junction. After the first, do not accelerate hard before you are ready for the second. They are very close together. Arrive at a controlled speed, apply normal give way rules at each one, and do not let the proximity of the junctions rush your approach.
