The Marsh Lane route, the Cowley circuit with the bay park
This circuit leaves Cowley on Hollow Way, runs north up the Eastern Bypass to the Headington roundabout, then drops into Headington on the A40 West for a bay park at the Marsh Lane car park. It comes back through Headley Way, London Road and The Slade.
Routes are chosen by the examiner on the day, not requested by you. What every circuit out of Cowley shares is Hollow Way as the first road.

Cowley test centre
Right out onto Hollow Way, second exit at the Horspath Driftway mini roundabout, then left onto the Eastern Bypass.
Headington roundabout
Third exit, signed A40 West. The post calls this the toughest section on the route, and most learners agree.
Toot Hill Butts
The first exit off the A40, and easy to miss if you do not know it is coming. Then the B4150 past the hospitals.
Marsh Lane
Right onto Marsh Lane, left into the car park, and the bay park. Joining Marsh Lane is the tricky part, not the parking.
Headley Way back
Franklin Road, Woodlands Road and the 20 mph zone, then London Road and The Slade back to Cowley.
Six places this route catches people out
Most of this route is ordinary Oxford driving. These six points are where the faults come from, and every one of them can be practised beforehand.
The Headington roundabout
Third exit, signed for the A40 West. This is the section learners name most often as the hardest part of the route.
Choose your lane on the approach rather than while you are already on the roundabout. A late decision here leaves you committed to the wrong exit.

Missing it is not a fault in itself. What follows usually is, because the correction is rushed.

This is a working public car park, not a quiet test centre one. Other drivers will be moving while you are manoeuvring.
The parking itself is the part people practise. Keeping observation going all the way through it is the part they drop.

The residential loop through Headley Way, Franklin Road and Woodlands Road drops to 20 mph.
It comes straight after faster roads, which is exactly when a speed limit is easiest to miss.

Hollow Way, Marsh Lane and The Slade are 30 mph. The ring road is 50. The B4150 is 40. Franklin Road is 20.
Making proper progress is part of the test. Sitting at 40 on a clear 50 attracts a fault just as speeding does.

This is the manoeuvre tied to this route. The examiner may ask for either version, so both are worth practising. Reference points differ from car to car, so use the ones your instructor set with you rather than a number off the internet.
Reverse into a bay
then drive forward out
- Pull past the bay you are aiming for, far enough that the turn is not tight.
- Full observation before you move. All round, and again over your shoulder as the car swings.
- Reverse slowly and steer for the bay. Slow car, quick hands.
- Straighten up, check you are inside the lines, then drive forward out when the examiner asks.

- Approach at walking pace and turn in when your reference point lines up.
- Straighten as you enter so you are square rather than at an angle.
- Reversing out is the assessed half. Check all round before you move, and keep checking.
- Look where the car is going, not only where it has been.

Out of the test centre
- Leave the car park and turn left out of James Wolfe Road.
- Turn right onto Hollow Way. The limit rises to 30 mph.
- At the Horspath Driftway mini roundabout, take the second exit.
- Turn left onto Eastern Bypass Road. The limit rises to 50 mph.
The Headington roundabout
- Follow the Eastern Bypass north to the Headington roundabout.
- Take the third exit, signed A40 West.
- Choose your lane before you reach the roundabout, not on it.
Toot Hill Butts and the B4150
- Watch for the first exit, Toot Hill Butts. It is easy to miss if you do not know it is there.
- Pick up the B4150 heading towards the Headington hospitals. The limit is 40 mph.
- Turn left, staying on the B4150.
- Turn right to continue.
Marsh Lane and the bay park
- Turn right onto Marsh Lane. Traffic can arrive quickly from the left off the ring road, so check both ways properly.
- Turn left into the Marsh Lane car park.
- The bay park happens here, either reversing into a bay or driving forward into one.
The residential loop
- Left onto Headley Way.
- Right onto Franklin Road. This is the 20 mph zone.
- Left onto Woodlands Road.
- Left back onto Headley Way.
The return to the test centre
- Left onto London Road.
- Left onto The Slade. Back to 30 mph.
- Right into Windmill Road.
- At the Hollow Way mini roundabout, take the second exit.
- Left onto James Wolfe Road and back into the test centre car park.
Practise the bay park where it actually happens
Reading a route is useful. Driving it with someone who has taken hundreds of learners round it is what changes the result. We cover this circuit as part of normal lessons, in a car you already know, at the times of day the test is likely to happen.

Can I practise the Marsh Lane route before my test?
Yes. The roads are public and we drive them in normal lessons. Practising the actual Cowley test routes with an instructor who knows them is one of the best ways to prepare, though you will not know on the day which circuit you are getting.
How many driving faults can I get and still pass?
Fifteen. A sixteenth fails you, and so does a single serious or dangerous fault at any point. The bay park is marked the same way as everything else on the route.
