Oxford Driving Test: The Florence Park Route

he Florence Park route is one of the test routes used from Cowley test centre in Oxford. It takes you through the residential streets of Hollow Way, Florence Park, and Church Cowley Road before joining the Eastern Bypass ring road for a dual carriageway section, looping around the Kassam area, and returning to the test centre through the Cowley junction roundabouts.

The Florence Park driving test route starts and ends at James Wolfe Road in Cowley. You will drive along Hollow Way, turn right at the Oxford Road traffic lights, pass through Rymers Lane, Campbell Road, and Florence Park Road, then join the Eastern Bypass ring road, take a loop toward the Kassam area with two slip roads and speed limit changes, and return via the A4142 and Cowley junction roundabouts.

Leaving the test centre: Hollow Way

From James Wolfe Road, you turn left onto Hollow Way. As you join, the speed limit changes to 30 mph, so build your speed steadily rather than hesitating on the road.

One of the first challenges on this route is the bus stop on Hollow Way. If a bus is stationary and blocking your path, the examiner expects you to handle it properly. Slow down, creep forward to assess the gap, create an angle, and overtake when it is safe to do so. Do not wait indefinitely, but equally do not go if the road is not clear.

Further along Hollow Way, you may encounter parked cars on the left. This creates a meeting situation with oncoming traffic. Give way to oncoming vehicles before proceeding, and hold a confident position rather than drifting unnecessarily wide.

Turning right at the Oxford Road traffic lights

At the end of Hollow Way, you turn right onto Oxford Road at a set of traffic lights. This is one of the junctions on this route where learners most commonly collect a serious fault.

The critical rule here is that you must only turn right when your exit road is clear. At a busy junction, it can feel like you need to go as soon as you get a gap in oncoming traffic, but if the exit road ahead is blocked by queueing traffic, moving into the junction and stopping in the middle is a serious fault. Wait for the exit to clear before you commit to the turn, even if that means missing a gap.

If there is a vehicle coming from the opposite direction also turning right, position correctly, be patient, and make sure both of you can move safely before going.

Between Towns Road and the mini roundabout

After turning onto Oxford Road, you turn left onto Between Towns Road. Shortly after, there is a mini roundabout on Between Towns Road where you take the second exit.

Give way to traffic from the right before moving, and take the second exit clearly and confidently. Mini roundabouts in Oxford are assessed carefully because learners often rush them or fail to give way properly.

 The Florence Park residential streets

This is the section that gives the route its name. You move through a series of quieter residential roads, but the demand on observation and positioning stays consistent throughout.

 Rymers Lane

From Between Towns Road, you turn right into Rymers Lane. Immediately after the turn, there is a meeting area where oncoming vehicles may already be waiting or approaching. Check before you commit to your position on the road and give way if required.

 Campbell Road

From Rymers Lane, you turn left into Campbell Road. This road has another meeting situation. Keep your observation sharp and be ready to give way where necessary.

 Florence Park Road

You turn left into Florence Park Road. This is a quieter street, but keep your speed appropriate and your observation consistent. Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles pulling out.

Church Cowley Road: a busy junction that requires patience

From Florence Park Road, you turn right onto Church Cowley Road. This is one of the busier roads on the route, and the challenge is that parked vehicles along the road can limit your view when you are emerging at the junction.

Take your time here. If parked vehicles are blocking your sightlines, inch forward slowly until you can see clearly. Do not emerge until you have a proper view and a safe gap. Rushing this junction because you feel the examiner is waiting is a common mistake, and it is one the examiner will mark.

Rose Hill: a sharp left and a speed change

From Church Cowley Road, you turn left onto Rose Hill. This is a sharper turn than it may first appear, so your positioning and steering need to be controlled.

Shortly after the turn, the speed limit changes to 30 mph. Look for the signs and respond promptly. The examiner will note if you are still travelling at a different speed when the limit has already changed.

The Eastern Bypass: Heyford Hill roundabout, 3rd exit

You join the Eastern Bypass ring road and approach the Heyford Hill roundabout. Here you take the 3rd exit, which means you position in the middle lane on approach.

Check your mirrors, signal, and move into the middle lane in good time. On the roundabout, follow the lane, check your mirrors as you pass the second exit, signal left, and move to the outer lane as you exit. Do not cut across from the middle lane without checking the outer lane first.

The A4074 slip roads and the Kassam area

This section involves two slip roads and a roundabout near the Kassam area. There are speed limit changes here that catch a lot of learners out, often because concentration is focused on the manoeuvres rather than the signs.

Slip road toward Reading: cancel your signal

You turn left onto the A4074 slip road toward Reading. Once you have moved onto the slip road, cancel your left indicator. Many learners leave it on after the turn, which is misleading to other drivers and will be noted by the examiner.

The Kassam slip road and the 40 mph limit

Shortly after, you take the slip road on the left toward the Kassam area. The speed limit on this road changes to 40 mph. Build your speed appropriately once on the slip road and match the limit.

Brick Kiln Lane roundabout: 2nd exit, keep right, 20 mph zone

At the Brick Kiln Lane roundabout, you take the 2nd exit. After coming off the roundabout, keep to the right. The speed limit then drops to 20 mph, and this is the point on the route where learners most often miss a speed limit change. The transition from 40 mph to 20 mph happens quickly after the roundabout exit. Look for the signs and reduce your speed without hesitation.

Henley Road mini roundabout

You take the 1st exit at the Henley Road mini roundabout. Give way to the right and move through cleanly.

Returning to the ring road

From the Kassam area, you turn left onto the A4074 to emerge back onto the ring road toward the Heyford Hill roundabout direction. Check your mirrors, signal, and merge with traffic confidently.

The Eastern Bypass roundabout: 2nd exit toward the A4142

This is the most technically demanding roundabout on the Florence Park route.

You take the 2nd exit, which means you approach in the middle lane. Signal and position in good time. On the roundabout, stay in the middle lane and check your mirrors as you approach your exit.

When you exit, pay attention to your lane position. The left lane as you come off this roundabout is a priority lane, which means you will naturally exit on the right side of the road. Do not immediately try to merge left. Build your speed in the right lane first, then check your mirrors, signal, and move to the left when there is a safe and comfortable gap.

The A4142 roundabout: 2nd exit, middle lane again

You continue on the A4142 and take the 2nd exit at the next roundabout. Choose the middle lane on approach, follow the same exit technique, and check mirrors as you pass the first exit. These two roundabouts come fairly close together, so your lane discipline and observation need to remain consistent.

The Cowley junction roundabouts and the return to the test centre

 Slip road to Cowley

You take the left slip road toward the Cowley junction roundabout. This brings you back into familiar Cowley roads and the last section of the test.

 B480 roundabout

Take the 1st exit here. Signal correctly and exit cleanly.

Garsington Road roundabout

Take the 2nd exit at the Garsington Road roundabout. Use the middle lane on approach, as you would at the previous ring road roundabouts.

The final stretch: back to the test centre

As you approach the turn onto Hollow Way, the speed limit changes to 20 mph just before the junction. Look for the signs and reduce your speed before you make the turn. This is a detail that is easy to miss when you are concentrating on finding the junction.

You turn right into Hollow Way and then right into James Wolfe Road to return to the test centre.

Key points to remember on the Florence Park route

  • The speed limit changes to 30 mph as you turn into Hollow Way. Build speed promptly.
  • If a bus is stopped on Hollow Way, creep forward, create an angle, and overtake when the road is clear.
  • Give way to oncoming traffic where parked vehicles narrow Hollow Way.
  • At the Oxford Road traffic lights, only turn right when the exit road ahead is clear. Moving into a blocked junction is a serious fault.
  • There are meeting situations on Rymers Lane and Campbell Road. Give way where required.
  • At the Church Cowley Road junction, take your time. Parked vehicles may block your view. Inch forward until you can see properly.
  • On Rose Hill, the speed limit changes to 30 mph shortly after the turn. Look for the signs.
  • At the Heyford Hill roundabout, use the middle lane for the 3rd exit.
  • After joining the A4074 slip road toward Reading, cancel your left signal.
  • After the Kassam slip road, the speed drops to 40 mph, then to 20 mph after the Brick Kiln Lane roundabout. Both changes are commonly missed.
  • At the Eastern Bypass roundabout toward the A4142, use the middle lane. When you exit, the left lane is a priority lane. Build speed, then merge left safely when a gap appears.
  • The speed changes to 20 mph just before the right turn into Hollow Way on the return leg.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Florence Park route used often at Cowley test centre?

Test routes are chosen by the examiner on the day and are not announced in advance. The Florence Park route is one of several routes used from Cowley test centre. The best preparation is to be comfortable with all the roads the test centre uses, not to focus on any single route.

What happens if I block a junction at the Oxford Road traffic lights?

If you move into a junction when the exit road is blocked and then have to stop in the middle, this is recorded as a serious fault. A serious fault means an automatic test failure. The correct approach is to wait at the stop line until the exit road clears, even if the traffic light is green.

What is a meeting situation and how should I handle it?

A meeting situation occurs when the road narrows to the point where only one vehicle can pass at a time. You assess who has priority based on which side the obstruction falls. If a parked vehicle is on your side of the road, you give way to oncoming traffic. If it is on the opposite side, you have priority but should still pass with care. Rymers Lane and Campbell Road on this route both have meeting situations that the examiner will assess.

Why do learners miss the 20 mph speed limit at Brick Kiln Lane?

After the Brick Kiln Lane roundabout, the speed drops from 40 mph to 20 mph. Because learners are concentrating on exiting the roundabout correctly, the speed limit signs can pass quickly. Your instructor should flag this point specifically so you know to look for it. The transition is fast, and reducing speed promptly matters.

What does it mean when the left lane is a priority lane after the Eastern Bypass roundabout?

When you exit the Eastern Bypass roundabout toward the A4142, you come off on the right side of a two-lane road because of the way the exit is angled. The left lane at that point is marked as a priority lane with its own merging traffic. You should build your speed in the right lane first, then check your mirrors and signal before moving to the left when there is a safe gap. Do not attempt to move left immediately as you exit.

How do I handle a stationary bus on Hollow Way?

If a bus is stopped at a bus stop and blocking your path, slow down and assess the situation. Creep forward to create a better angle if needed. If the road ahead is clear of oncoming traffic and there is enough space, overtake the bus at a safe speed. The examiner expects you to make progress rather than waiting an unnecessarily long time, but only go when it is genuinely safe.
