Automatic vs Manual Driving Lessons in Oxford: Which Should You Choose?
One of the first decisions every new learner has to make. It affects your licence, your progress, and how much your lessons cost overall. Here is everything you need to know before you book.
Most Oxford learners choose automatic, and most pass first time. Here is why, and how to decide what is right for you.

Automatic vs manual: side by side
Automatic
No clutch. No gears.
Focus on the road from lesson one
Faster progress for most learners
Less stressful in Oxford city traffic
Covers electric and hybrid vehicles
Licence restricted to automatics only
Manual
Full licence flexibility
Licence covers both manual and automatic
More vehicle options long term
Clutch control takes more early lessons
More demanding in stop-start Oxford traffic
Generally more hours to reach test standard
The licence difference: this matters
Pass in a manual and your licence covers both types of car for life. Pass in an automatic and your licence is restricted to automatics only. A separate test is required to drive manual later. For most Oxford learners this is less of an issue than it sounds, as electric and hybrid vehicles are all automatic and increasingly common on UK roads.
What does it cost?
At Oxon Driving Tuitions, automatic and manual lessons are priced the same.
| learner Type | 1 hour | 2 hours | 10 hours |
| New learner intro offer | £40 | £80 | £400 |
| NHS / Student (valid ID) | £40 | £80 | £400 |
| Standard ongoing rate | £45 | £85 | £420 |
ecause automatic learners often need fewer total hours to reach test standard, the overall cost can work out lower even at the same hourly rate. Find out how many lessons you might need in our Oxford learner guide.
